About Kerry…
Kerry Corney,
Australian woodturner Kerry Corney creates beautiful and lasting hand-crafted work, bringing his passion for timber and focus on detail to every unique piece. Setting him apart, Kerry shares his love for timber by inviting customers to embark on the journey of each distinctive creation. Along with the joy of receiving their beloved item, customers will also take delight in digital media featuring their piece’s journey from timber, turned into a unique and timeless work of art.
Kerry credits his creativity and skill to his diverse life experience. Following in his father’s footsteps, Kerry joined the military at 19, embarking on a life that taught discipline and precision. He served the Australian Defence Force for 7 years with tours in Timor-Leste, Iraq, and Afghanistan. After leaving the army, Kerry followed his inherent aptitude for building into the construction industry. He gained valuable insight into the craftsmanship required to deliver complex buildings from plan, to project to product, and it was there that Kerry’s spark for creativity began.
After seven years of refining his abilities through labouring, and site supervising, Kerry began to look towards developing his academic interests. In 2019, he graduated with Distinction from Griffith University, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. Kerry continued to serve Australia working as an emergency nurse for 3 years.
In his leisure time, Kerry began to learn the fine art of wood turning under his father-in-law Bill’s tutelage. Bill was a traditionalist at heart and embraced “the old way.” He taught Kerry unique woodturning styles using traditional chisels and tools.
Woodturning for Kerry quite quickly became more than a hobby, and before long it was his passion-project. The workshop was a place of solace for Kerry from the stress and grief of infantry deployments, and the loss of family members. Woodturning became an outlet for him to develop his positive energy, and channel it into creating new life from old wood.
In 2022, Kerry made the decision to focus all his efforts on woodturning and so the story of Kerry Corney Woodturning began. Kerry will most often be found in his workshop creating another unique work of art or sharing knowledge, experience and mistakes with others, and wants people to share in the special metamorphosis of each of his works.
When he isn’t in the woodshed, he enjoys gardening and landscaping his homestead, and spending time with his wife Nadine and their beautiful furry daughters Rosie and Raegan.
